Womanhood

This Woman’s worth…PART 2

As you know (or may not know; this blog aims to keep on top of current affairs but there is only so much one person can do! :-)) it was International Women’s Day on the 8 March. A day set aside to celebrate and commend the works of amazing women all over the globe and how ironic (I am organised but not that organised) and of course how timely, that my second piece on a Women’s worth should coincide with the month in which women are celebrated? (I do love life’s little wonders…I am easily pleased; sad I know) So this piece is to commemorate women all over the globe whilst simultaneously not loosing sight of a very important issue- The value a woman places on herself….

Last week was interesting to say the least not just because I was treated to Krispy Kremes twice (do they do gift cards?) but I managed to have some much needed banter with a friend that never fails to make me laugh…And take my word for it, I laughed profusely as young women do after a hard days grind (albeit to the detriment of my mum’s ears and her hope of me not ruining my chances of getting married with my raucous laugh). But it wasn’t all fun and games because she also said some very profound things that left me ruminating for days after…

You live and you learn…

Women have made huge strides in terms of decreasing the gap between men and women. Academically, we have excelled with many of us holding down not only a first degree but a Masters as well…we are Managers of self-started charities (massive salute to my lovely Abigail who started United 4 Change)…corporately, we have been valued for the diplomatic but yet decisive approach that we bring to the table which probably explains why Margaret Thatcher retorted ‘If you want something said, ask a man but if you want something done, ask a woman’ (I love the audacity of this statement mwahahahahahahaha)…

So…are women knowledgeable? No doubt. Are we equipped? Most definitely BUT we still have tons of learning to do and this is because there is no rule of thumb when it comes to how we relate with the opposite sex. There are hundreds of articles that have titles that would make my grandmother’s eyes water such as ‘How to keep your man’, ‘ ‘How to seduce a man’ but there are hardly any articles that I have stumbled across that teach you how to truly value yourself…

And my friend made a simple but yet beautiful statement…it was like music to my ears because she said it so gently but just like those three magical words, they were loaded with so much meaning:

‘Ola its actually time to learn and live…not live and then learn…forget all this stuff about coming out of a 3 year ‘relationship’ (if you even want to call it that) or a 5 or 6 year ‘situation’ and then suddenly realising that actually, you’re better than the crap you took off that person…but it’s about recognising that no, you actually deserve to be treated like a lady simply because of the way God sees you…’ (Heavy stuff for a Monday evening…isshh…)

And this is sooo easier said than done (I repeat- soooo easier said than done) but I think there is some truth in what she said. The colloquialism suggests that you ‘live and learn’ but in order to save ourselves from a lot of time wasted, it’s time to learn as much as possible in order to live carrying ourselves in the way that God has always intended for us to do so..

And the truth be told, whilst the bible is not signposted with chapters that are entitled: ‘How to value yourself; the dummies guide for women’ there are loads of examples of women who have indeed carried themselves with poise and grace and in a nutshell acted like they were actually worth something! A case in point is the amazing story of Esther…

So the action of the day is to equip yourself not in the traditional way of embarking on yet another course but to learn what the bible says about how God sees you and then actually start living as such…Until the next time!! Xxx 🙂

  1. Your friends words are very true.

Ola you ARE an amazing woman! Please continue to write, so many people (young ladies and gents) need to read and take in what you are saying. You need to the writing a piece of the mindset Hollywood has created in shaping what many perceive to be their worth, or what they should be searching for! Too many are trapped in the mindset and need to be reading this!

    God bless you sis!
