So this is an age old classic and one that certainly transcends time. I have been dying to read it and I have to say, it lived up to the hype; it was absolutely phenomenal. And what a juxtaposition. Whilst it is a sad story (Maya Angelou was molested when she was eight and as a result became mute, until she met an amazing woman who helped her find her voice again), it is beautifully written. It is so sonorous and as a lover of literacy, it almost felt like I was reading a song. However, my cousin read it and she didn’t share my sense of enthusiasm…

Anyhoo…if you love a good tale of overcoming the odds to triumph, family values and excellently written, then this is the book for you.
